Built for the way med students actually study
AnkiBoss started with a simple frustration: you hit an unfamiliar term mid-review, break your flow to look it up, and twenty open tabs later you’ve forgotten which card you were even on. We thought the explanation should just be there — right on the card, the moment you need it.
What we’re building
AnkiBoss is an Anki add-on and companion website that turns the deck you already review into a self-explaining one. As you study, medical terms are detected and highlighted; click one and a concise, high-yield explanation opens in place — with the medical category, organ-system tags, and the references behind it.
The same toolkit also helps you build cards in the first place: drop in a lecture PDF, slide deck, or set of notes and generate ready-to-review Anki cards, or spin up USMLE-style practice questions to pressure-test what you’ve learned. It’s the difference between passively reading and actively recalling — which is the whole point of spaced repetition.
And because studying alone gets lonely, AnkiBoss includes NASCARD — multiplayer review races that turn a grind through your due cards into something you’ll actually look forward to.
Who it’s for
Medical students preparing for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 — especially anyone already deep in the major community decks like AnKing, Lightyear, Pathoma, and Sketchy. If your day revolves around Anki and you keep meeting terms you half-remember, AnkiBoss was built for you. It works alongside the question banks and video resources you already use rather than trying to replace them.
What we believe
Meet students where they study
Med students already live in Anki. So instead of asking you to open one more tab, AnkiBoss works inside the cards you're already reviewing — click a highlighted term, get the explanation, keep going.
High-yield, not exhaustive
Every explanation is written for the question in front of you, not the textbook chapter behind it. A tight summary first, deeper pathophysiology and clinical associations one click away when you want them.
Honest about what we are
AnkiBoss is a study aid for boards prep, not a clinical reference and not medical advice. We say so plainly, and we'd rather under-promise than dress up a flashcard tool as something it isn't.
Priced like a student tool
There's a permanent free tier, paid plans that start at the price of a coffee, and pay-per-deck if you'd rather not subscribe at all. No long contracts, no surprise upsells.
A note on responsible use: AnkiBoss explanations are a study aid for exam preparation. They are not medical advice and should never be used to guide patient care. Curious how our content is made and kept accurate? Read about our content & sources.
Try it on your own deck
The free tier is permanent — install the add-on, paste your token, and start clicking terms. Upgrade only if and when you need more.
